River Running Regulations
-Salt River Canyon Only-



  1. OPEN AREA: River running/rafting is restricted to the Salt River from the Salt River Canyon Bridge (Highway 60) to the west boundary of the Reservation.  Salt Banks (four miles downstream from the confluence of Cibecue Creek and the Salt River) is closed to all entry and fishing. Boaters can raft past the Salt Banks but cannot get out of their boats in that area. Please obey all closed signs in the area.

  2. SEASON: Salt River is open year-long to river rafting/running. Water flows are best druing the peak spring runoff period (typically March through May), although optimum rafting conditions will vary from year to year.

  3. PERMITS:
    1. Individuals floating the river in this area and either entering or exiting the river from the White Mountain Apache side of the Salt River must have a valid "Private River Running Permit" . This includes individuals using rafts, kayaks or boats.
    2. Clients of licensed river-running outfitters (Guided Trips) must have individual "Commercial River Running Permits" provided to them by the outfitter.


  4. CAMPING: Reservation River Running Permits include one (1) night camping in any campground within the Open Area. This camping permit is good only fo the date of issue of the River Running Permit.

  5. REGULATIONS:
    1. Permits and Waivers are available at the Salt River Store
    2. All trash must be packed out of the area by rafters. It is unlawful to bury trash!
    3. River rafting, canoeing or kayaking on the Black River, Whiteriver or the Salt River above the Salt River Canyon Bridge is absolutely prohibited. Anyone found in these closed areas will be cited and prosecuted.


  6. REQUIRED EQUIPMENT: The following equipment items are required for each raft/boat as a condition to entering the Salt River.
    1. Good quality boat (no "rubber duckies", open canoes, etc.).
    2. Personal flotation for each passenger, spare paddle and throw rope.
    3. Fire-pans and personal human-waste disposal containers for those spending the night anywhere along the Salt River (multiple day permitees). All campfires must be contained within fire-pans and all human-waste (and trash) must be packed out by permitees.
