Black and Salt River Special Use Permits are required for ADULTS entering and accessing the Black and Salt River for all recreational activities EXCEPT for those holding a valid TRIBAL HUNTING PERMIT OR VALID RIVER RAFTING PERMIT.
ADULT PERMITS:
Special Use Permits are required for each ADULT (any person 15 years or older) camping, fishing, hiking, canyoneering or sightseeing in the Black and Salt River Special Use Area (defined below).
JUVENILE PERMITS:
Children ages 10 to 14 are required to hold a JUVENILE FISHING PERMIT to access the Black and Salt River Special Use Area. Juvenile Fishing Permit cover other recreation activities while the juvenile holder is within the Special Use Area (camping, etc.).
Children under the age of 10 do not require permits of any type to access the Black and Salt River Special Use Area. But the child must be accompanied by a lawfully permitted ADULT at all times.

DEFINITIONS AND REGULATIONS
The Black and Salt River Special Use Area is defined as "all areas within the canyon corridor/canyon feature of the Black and Salt Rivers, which form the southern boundary of the Fort Apache Indian Reservation.
ADULT Special Use permits coves all authorized recreational activities in the Special Use Area.
ADULT Special Use permits are also valid for use at other general recreation areas on the Reservation for all general recreational activities authorized in those subject area (fishing, camping, hiking, etc.).
Persons holding valid tribal hunting licenses/permits (migratory birds, small/big game) or valid rafting permits are NOT required to also obtain Special Use permits for these areas.

SPECIAL USE AREA CLOSURES
The Upper Black River Area, defined as the river upstream/east of the Big Bonito Creek confluence and south of Route Y40 east to the Reservation boundary is CLOSED to all recreation access after LABOR DAY. Areas include White Crossing, Ten of Diamonds and Rattlesnake Point.
The area between Salt River Draw and one mile downstream of Rock Canyon, between Salt River and north to the Salt River canyon rim is closed to all non-tribal-member visitation. (except for driving access on Route G1 and fishing and camping along the Salt River between Salt River Draw and the old Salt Banks Campground). Rivers rafters may use the southern bank, but are prohibited from using or landing on the northern bank in this area. Salt Banks and the old Salt Banks campgrounds are CLOSED.
