GUIDED - BLACK BEAR GENERAL


 

A quick glance in the Boone & Crockett Record Book will reflect a good number of trophy-class Black Bear and Mountain Lion coming from the Fort Apache Indian Reservation.  All of our bear and lion hunts are fully guided, and are offered through a limited number of qualified outfitters that obtain exclusive guided licenses through the Wildlife & Outdoor Recreation Division. Bear hunts are offered through a split-season format each year, with hunting methods allowing the limited/regulated use of bait and dogs by licensed guides.  Hunting success for black bear has historically peaked during the spring and fall months.

SEASON DATES: April 1 through August 30, 2009 AND

October 10 through November 30, 2009

LEGAL BEAR/BAG LIMIT: Any Black Bear, except sows with cubs.  One (1) Black Bear per tag; a maximum of two (2) Black Bears per Hunter calendar year.
NUMBER OF PERMITS: 200
PERMIT COST: $300.00 permit cost and $25.00 application fee, PLUS GUIDE FEES
LEGAL TAKING DEVICE: Any legal firearm bow and arrow as described in section R1.A

METHODS OF LEGALLY TAKING GAME

Section R1.A - BIG GAME except ELK, may be legally taken with the following weapons:

i.     Center fire rifles, muzzle-loading rifles, and all other rifles using black Powder or pyrodex.

ii.    Center fire handguns and handguns of a caliber not les than .44 Magnum

iii.    Shotguns, not less than 20 gauge, shooting slugs or #4 shot (minimum).

iv.    Bows having a standard pull or forty or more pounds, using arrows with metal broadheads no less than 7/8-inch width cutting edge.

v.     Javelina may additionally be taken with .22 rimfire magnum rifles and 5mm rimfire rifles. 

UNITS OPEN TO HUNTING: Reservation Wide
HUNT PACKAGE: All general Black Bear Hunts, Mountain Lion Hunts and Bobcat Hunts must be booked through registered/licensed W&ORD Reservation Outfitters.  Hunters must be accompanied by a registered/licensed W&ORD Reservation Outfitter at all times during their hunt.
