GENERAL OUTDOOR RECREATION REGULATIONS

Reservation Outdoor Recreation Permits are available for other miscellaneous outdoor activites. The following list of outdoor activites are allowed in designated areas as long as each vehicle has at least one of the following valid Reservation permits: Outdoor Recreation, Fishing, Hunting, or Camping.


  1. WINTER ACTIVITIES (Outside Sunrise Ski Park Resort)
    1. SNOW SLEDDING, TUBING, and SNOWMOBILING
      OPEN AREAS:
      SUNRISE WINTER-USE AREA: Defined as the area in the northeast portion of the Reservation that is bounded by Highway 260 to the north, Hwy 273 to the west and south, and the Reservation boundary fence on the east.
    2. CROSS COUNTRY SKIING
      OPEN AREAS:
      1. SUNRISE WINTER-USE AREA: Defined above
      2. HAYSTACK AREA: The area in the northeast portion of the Reservation that is north of Highway 260, to the Reservation boundary.
     
  2. HIKING, PICNICKING, BIKING, CANYONEERING and SIGHTSEEING

    1. HIKING and PICNICKING
      OPEN AREAS:
      Hiking is allowed from designated campgrounds and along perennial streams or lakes. All areas are open to picnicking, except the Mount Baldy Wilderness Area and areas otherwise posted as "Closed", which are closed to hiking.
    2. CANYONEERING
      This is restricted to hiking only. No technical climbing allowed (pitons, ropes or repelling) unless under the supervision of a Canyoneering guide licensed by the White Mountain Apache Wildlife and Outdoor Recreation Division.

    3. BIKING (NON-MOTORIZED ONLY)
      OPEN AREAS:
      1. PARADISE AREA: This area is located south of Horseshoe Lake, and is bound by Route 78 on the south and the North Fork of the White River on the north.
      2. FORESTDALE AREA: This area includes Routes 66,67 and 68, all east of Highway 60.
      3. DESIGNATED CAMPGROUNDS: Biking is allowed in and around established campgrounds on existing roadways only.

      **REGULATIONS**

      1. Biking is allowed on established roads ONLY.
      2. For your own saftey, biking is not allowed at night.
      3. Biking is not allowed in Primitive Camping Areas, the Mount Baldy Wilderness Area or areas posted as"Closed".
       
    4. SIGHTSEEING/DRIVING
      OPEN AREAS:
      Reservation roads are open to vehicles except the Mount Baldy Wilderness Area and roads otherwise posted as "Closed". No driving is allowed off roads.
    5. ARCHEOLOGICAL/HISTORICAL SITES
      Tribal and Federal Law prohibit unsupervised visitation, removal destruction or defacement of natural and cultural objects or locations. Please call the Cultural Center (520) 338-4625 for information on visiting sites.

      KEY OUTDOOR RECREATION REGULATIONS

      1. All Terrain Vehicles (ATV's) including 3 & 4 wheelers and Dirt Bikes are strictly prohibited from the Reservation.
      2. Swimming is prohibited in all Reservation waters.
      3. Tubing in streams is prohibited except in the Salt River Canyon area see River Running Regulations.
      4. It is illegal to destroy or deface any signs or other campground facilities.
      5. It is illegal to shoot any type of firearm, arrow, or pneumatic weapon (airguns) on the Reservation without a permit.
      6. Vehicles must stay on established roadways at all times.
      7. Spotlightling of wildlife is prohibited.
