KEY CAMPING REGULATIONS
Campsites must be clean when vacated. Trash must be placed in proper containers. Do not bury trash or dump trash or sewage into streams, lakes or campground areas. All campfires must be of reasonable and controllable size. Campers must make sure all campfire coals are fully extinguished before leaving a campsite. Only dead and down wood may be collected to use in campfires. It is illegal to cut green trees or break branches from green trees. Dogs must be on a leash at all times. Leashes may not exceed ten (10) feet in length. Please respect the comfort of other campers. Keep music and other audible activities at a reasonable volume. Discharging fireworks anywhere on the Reservation, including campgrounds, is strictly prohibited. Campers are limited to 1 table/daily permit or 2 tables per monthly permit. Do not put nails or other hardware into trees. Do not erect permanent structures in campgrounds.
- DESIGNATED CAMPING AREAS:
Camping on the reservation is on a "first-come-first-served" basis and does not require reservations. Most campgrounds have plenty of places to camp except July 4th and Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend. Horseshoe, Sunrise, Reservation, Pacheta and Drift Fence campgrounds are rarely full even on holiday weekends.
The Division has established campgrounds at selected stream and lake sites throughout the Reservation. All high country campgrounds will not receive services after September 15. Campers may continue to use seasonal-service campgrounds, but do so at their own risk and are require to pack out all trash. Services to all Reservation campgrounds will normally resume May 15 of each year (weather permitting).
PERMITS:
- A valid Reservation Camping Permit is required for each vehicle. People who bike, hike or take a bus onto the Reservation are required to purchase an individual (per Person) Reservation Camping Permit.
- Reservation Camping Permits are not required for holders of valid Reservation River-Running Permits (see River Running Regulations) or Cyclone Lake Rent-A-Lake Permits.
- Reservation camping permits are not transferable.
SPECIAL REGULATIONS - DESIGNATED CAMPING:
- Camping is restricted to established camping sites only in DESIGNATED CAMPING AREAS. Designated Camping Areas will contain one or more of the following:
- picnic tables
- fire ring
- trash barrel
- toilet facilities
- water outlets
- Designated Campgrounds are for the use of current permit holders only.
- PRIMITIVE CAMPING AREAS Some of the more remote areas of the Reservation provide primitive camping opportunities for our guests. Primitive Area Campers are required to pack out camping and fishing refuse - ESPECIALLY TRASH.
- CAMPING REGULATIONS prohibit dumping of GEY WATER AND BLACK WATER (sewage) in any area that is not a specifically designated and approved septic holding facility. This dumping prohibition includes public restroom/toilet facilities.
PRIMITIVE LOCATIONS:
- BLACK RIVER and SALT RIVER, from the Eastern Boundary of the Fort Apache Indian Reservation - Highway 60 Bridge.
- WEST END, that portion of the Reservation west of Highway 60. Excluding the town of Cibecue and Highway 12.
- BONITO CREEK, 1/4 mile below Route Y-55 to its junction with Y-70.
SPECIAL REGULATIONS - PRIMITIVE CAMPING:
- Primitive campers are not required to camp in a designated camp site.
- In primitive areas, all refuse must be packed out.
